Whole Foods Plant Based Cereal - Rip’s Big Bowl
Ahhhh Rip's Big Bowl. The cereal that helped me make the change to a whole foods plant based diet. And not just me, my husband, and I just recently learned, John Stuart too. Yeah, THE John Stuart from The Daily Show. Check out the latest Plant Strong podcast to hear all about it.
When I first learned I could eat cereal on a whole foods plant based diet, I have to admit, I was pretty much sold on this lifestyle - just kidding, there are almost 1 million other reasons that sold me on living this way. But, how could I not be excited about getting to enjoy cereal again? For so long I was told and believed to stay away from all carbs. “Carbs are bad”, they said (insert eye roll). So, naturally I never ate cereal…until now! Woohoo!
Now don’t get me wrong, most cereals are horrible for us to consume, full of added sugars, processed junk and hardly any nutrients because most of them stripped away. This time though, it’s different. Rio’s Big Bowl isn't that typical cereal you find on the shelves of your favorite grocery store. This is life saving cereal. Cereal that seems to be almost made from God himself. It's full of whole grain goodness: Organic Sprouted whole grain wheat, rolled oats, sprouted barley, sprouted lentils, sprouted millet, sprouted soybeans, walnuts, and freeze dried fruit. These ingredients are not the typical processed foods in a box we are used to eating. The flavors are delicious, the amount of energy you experience from it is long lasting, and you’re satisfied well into lunch. Plus, can we say FIBER? Your bowels will definitely be thanking you for eating this soon after - just sayin'.
So where can you buy this amazing cereal? I love to buy it in bulk on Amazon:
or you can currently find it at Whole Foods.
If you aren’t able to find it, or purchase from amazon, I would suggest making one similar yourself. It is easy and tastes just as good. My husband actually makes his own from time to time and really enjoys it, and I also have one I like to throw together that is delicious!
Here’s our two cereal recipes below:
Cereal #1 Ingredients : Makes about serving 10-15 servings
You can use as little or as less of the following ingredients as you’d like. These are just the amounts we use to make this.
1 big bowl for mixing - we like to use a giant salad bowl.
2 cups rolled oats
8 oz chopped walnuts
8 oz raisins
1/2 box of Ezekial Golden Flax Cereal
3/4 box of whole wheat square cereal
Plant milk
Fresh fruit, ground flax for toppings (optional)
Instructions
Combine everything in a bowl and mix well.
Store in an air tight container. I like to use these
Pour yourself a bowl when you’re hungry. Top with fresh fruit, and ground flax if you’d like, and enjoy!
Note: To make one similar to Rip’s tri-berry version (the one I eat), eliminate the raisons, and replace with freeze dried raspberries, black berries and strawberries, or add fresh.
